GREEK REVIVAL

Greek Revival, in the context of American architecture, refers to
a movement that occurred in the late 18th century through the
early 19th century. The grand monumental cultural buildings
and temples such as the Parthenon precipitated the formation
of this style. Greek Revival flourished in the time of democratic
ideas due to its association with Grecian democracy. The rules of
symmetry and proportion in the architecture of ancient Greece
were the physical embodiment of democratic principles. In the
contemporary time that Greek Revival was created, it was not
thought of as a style but a renewed interest in the ancients.
Greek Revival is a well-known architectural style in the US since
many institutional buildings and monuments employ the usage of
this style. In Washington DC buildings such as the White House,
the Capitol, and the Lincoln Memorial are fine examples of Greek
Revival. Here in Northeast Ohio, being formerly a part of the
Connecticut Western Reserve, there is a legacy of Greek Revival
found in countless homes.
